You know how pattern directions always tell you to clip the seam allowance of a corner off? Well their method of one snip across the corner works okay but this is what I learned in my first semester in Fashion Design classes. It’s that basic. You need to know this and it’s so simple you will wonder why a pattern company couldn’t take the space for two extra sentences to tell you this tip. Watch the video and you will see what I mean.

The second tip is not so exciting but it is as important. Not pressing open your seams as you construct your garment will make it look “home made” and that’s not a good thing. You must iron as you sew. No avoiding it. But how do you iron collar seams or sleeve seams or other hard to reach areas? Well, it’s not that hard with my second simple trick and you can do it with something you already have. No need to spend money, just spend two minutes and watch the video!

(Tonight’s copy writing makes me feel as if I should be offering extra videos for a limited time only. However I promise more Basic Sewing Tips – for free, forever)

  1. Thanks for this tip, I will be using it soon. I will also show this video to my eleven year old granddaughter who loves to sew and makes a lot of cute items.

    • I’m happy to hear you found the tip useful. I wish my grandmother had taught me to sew. That would have been a wonderful way to spend time with her and I would have learned so much, so much sooner, and maybe without so many mistakes. Of course I did enjoy all the card games she taught me.
